Michelle Lai, an inspiration to women all over the world who dream of running their own successful business.
We caught up with Michelle and discovered a bit more about her key motivations, top business and best kept secrets for places to go to escape from it all……
What’s the best business advice you’ve ever been given or most important lesson you have learnt whilst building and running your own business?
I’ve always been taught to keep a close eye on your cashflow. For most creative/fashion businesses, until they’ve got stable distribution, they’re capital intensive and long payment cycles don’t help either. There’s a lot of money being spent before it comes back, so strict budgeting is the key to staying afloat.
What do you love most about what you do?
That’s a difficult question. I guess it’s that I love what I do and do what I love. Of course there are ups and downs but I try to stay focused on my goal. Life has been so much more colourful since being an entrepreneur and I’m learning new things everyday. I love being able to meet people from different strata and it’s the relationships I’ve made along the way that have been so inspiring for me. It keeps my mind open.
What’s your signature style and how does that manifest itself in your brand? We’d love to know what’s top of your wish list for this season?
If I had to say what my style is, I’d hope it’s casual chic! I’m naturally drawn to timeless and classical styles and don’t consider myself fashion savvy at all. I wear what’s comfortable and elegant. I bring this into MISCHA with practical timeless shapes and designing for the modern woman who’s always on the go.
You have the ultimate in perfect travel accessories and we love the tag line #JETSETMISCHA, what are your current favourite destinations for some time away from your desk?
I’m writing this from the beach on Koh Samui. It’s been my little secret for the last few years. I come here for retreat and time out. It’s a charming little island where I can take a step back and recharge. I also love Bali, it’s got a great balance of tropical paradise and great restaurant and nightlife scene. There’s also excellent diving and such good food!
Finally, if you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?
I’d wish that everyone had more compassion and understanding for each other. I think this would allow people to live more in harmony and not let their greed lead to conflicts and all the ugly sides of human nature.
